Senior Spotlight - Sydney Feddersen

Sydney joined the GEMS family in her ninth grade year and has blossomed in many ways throughout her high school career. Just as with each turn of a kaleidoscope one sees different facets of a beautiful image shining brightly, Sydney discovered hidden potential and possibilities in herself each year at GEMS.

Whether in class, drawing, or relaxing with classmates, Sydney’s creativity and sensitivity fill the air. She embodies many of the IB Learner Profile traits, but a reflective, caring thinker first comes to mind when characterizing Sydney. Ms. Lind, Theater teacher recalls, “Sydney is a quiet, thoughtful and intuitive young artist. I loved her understated but deeply haunting portrayal of one of the witches in our adaptation of Macbeth in her sophomore year. Her movement piece still sticks with me!”

Rising to meet many challenges, often investing to help others, Sydney also possesses a great compassion for animals. Her tenth grade personal project centered on ways to help feral cats. Sydney is resilient and has capitalized on many opportunities. Ms. Jay Annadurai, Individuals & Societies Teacher/Senior Advisor, recalls, “Sydney has persevered through many challenges, all the while maintaining her kind spirit and caring energy. She is tremendously creative, enjoys modeling, and has even funneled her passion for making jewelry into a very successful Etsy business. Sydney’s jewelry helps spread good karma, and she always cheers on and supports her peers in their own endeavors.”

It is clear to all that Sydney has a genuine, caring spirit and a benevolent heart. These qualities, coupled with her introspective nature will guide her to success in whatever endeavors she pursues. Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Guard well your spare moments. They are like uncut diamonds. Discard them and their value will never be known. Improve them and they will become the brightest gems in a useful life.” We hope Sydney carries Emerson’s creative voice and her GEMS experience with her as she embarks on her next adventure. All of us at GEMS wish her the absolute best and know great things are in store for her.
